Can I Avail Maternity Benefit If Unemployed?

One of the most common questions among expecting moms is:

“Pwede pa ba akong makakuha ng maternity benefit kahit unemployed na ako?”

The good news is — YES, it’s possible!
Being unemployed doesn’t automatically disqualify you from receiving the SSS maternity benefit, as long as you meet the requirements.

✅ Here’s What You Need to Qualify:

Even if you’re not currently working, you can still get the SSS maternity benefit if:

1. You have paid at least 3 monthly contributions within the 12-month period before the semester of your delivery or miscarriage.

Let’s break that down:

  • Semester = 6 months (the quarter of your due date plus the 2 quarters before that)
  • You need 3 paid contributions in the 12 months before that semester

📌 Example:
If your due date is August 2025, the semester is April to September 2025.
Count 12 months before that — from April 2024 to March 2025.
You need at least 3 contributions during that time.

2. You notified SSS about your pregnancy.

Even if you’re unemployed, you still need to submit your MAT-1 form (Maternity Notification) to SSS before delivery. This can be done online through the My.SSS portal or at an SSS branch.

👩‍👧 What if I’m a Voluntary Member?

If you stopped working but continued paying SSS as a voluntary member, you’re still eligible — as long as the contribution requirement is met. This is why many women choose to continue paying as voluntary members after resigning.

📝 What You Need to Prepare:

  • Valid ID
  • MAT-1 (maternity notification)
  • Proof of pregnancy (ultrasound or medical certificate)
  • MAT-2 (after giving birth)
  • Birth certificate of baby (after delivery)
  • Your SSS contributions record (you can check this online)

đź’ˇ Tips:

  • If you’re planning to resign or stop working, try to pay at least 3 contributions during the coverage period to stay qualified.
  • You can still pay as a voluntary member to maintain your eligibility.

Final Thoughts

Being unemployed doesn’t mean you lose your right to maternity benefits. As long as you meet the contribution and notification requirements, you can still claim your benefit — whether you’re jobless, resigned, or a stay-at-home mom.

Always check your SSS contributions and plan ahead if you’re expecting!
