SSS Maternity Qualifying Period (Updated Guide + Examples)
The SSS maternity qualifying periodⓘ determines whether your SSS contributions are counted for maternity benefits. It does NOT depend on how long you have been an SSS memberⓘ — only on whether you paid at least 3 valid contributions within the correct qualifying months.
This page explains the qualifying period in simple terms, with step-by-step computation and real delivery month examples.
What Is the SSS Maternity Qualifying Period?
The qualifying period is the 12-month period before the semester of your childbirth or miscarriage. Within this period, you must have at least three (3) paid SSS contributions.
How to Determine Your Qualifying Period
- Identify your expected delivery date (EDD)
- Determine the semester of contingencyⓘ
- Count back 12 months before that semester
- Check if you paid at least 3 SSS contributions within those months
Example: January Delivery
If your delivery date is January, the semester of contingency is January–June.
The qualifying period is the 12 months before that semester:
- January to December of the previous year
If you have at least 3 paid contributions within that period, you are qualified.
Common Reasons for Disqualification
- Contributions paid after the qualifying period
- Gaps in contribution payments
- Late or retroactive payments (not counted)
- Incorrect delivery date declared
Do Voluntary, Self-Employed, and OFW Members Qualify?
Yes. As long as the contributions are paid on time and fall within the qualifying period, they are valid — regardless of membership type.
